Insurance

Do I need insurance?

If you cause injury to another person, or cause damage to the property of another person or organisation, while you are cycling, you may be liable to pay for the cost of that injury and damage.

It’s a good idea to get insurance to cover this liability. You can also get insurance to cover injuries to yourself and damage to your bike, or theft of your bike.

There are different types of insurance available, including:

Public liability insurance

If you are involved in a collision, you will be covered for any property damage or injuries you might cause.

If you join Bicycle NSW you get public liability insurance and personal accident insurance as part of your standard membership fee. For more information, go to Bicycle NSW.

Personal accident insurance

This covers your own medical expenses and loss of income if you are injured in a cycling accident. (If your injuries have been caused by the fault of a motor vehicle driver you will be covered by the vehicle’s compulsory third party insurance. See Injuries.)

If you join Bicycle NSW you get public liability insurance and personal accident insurance as part of your standard membership fee. For more information, go to Bicycle NSW.

Bicycle damage and theft insurance

This covers damage to your own bicycle or theft to your bicycle. Your home and contents insurance may include cover for your bicycle, so it’s important to check with your insurer.
